Don't fight the idea instead embrace and enjoy it. Doing something personally distasteful, such as keeping up the facade of a false relationship, takes a great emotional toll on most individuals.

Become an asset to your company so your company can't live without you. This takes about as much effort as pretending to be friends with the management team. Politics in the workplace can only function with these options.

I suggest that you become so good at your job that politics at work cannot affect your future. Becoming irreplaceable at your job is very important. You do control the outcome of the business you are working in. Remarkably, this aspect results in your automatically achieving the aforementioned first alternative too.
