If you follow the financial news and I am guessing more and more people are these days you might have noticed something quite disturbing this morning.

Three major oil companies have posted their third quarter results and the numbers are staggering. First off Exxon mobile the world's largest company posted profits of 14.8 Billion dollars. That's 14.8 Billion with a B and this is profit not gross revenue and this is 1 quarter of a calendar year. That's 14 thousand 800 millions, I always find it amazing when you break any large number down like this.

The next company worth mentioning was Royal Dutch Shell their profits increased by 71% from the previous year . 71% and their profits for the third quarter was a modest 10.9 Billion, well maybe not modest!

Here is what really disgusts me, we live in a world where the oil companies are making most of the money and the largest oil rich nations knowingly fund terrorist activities. When you think about 9/11 and let's be honest it was Al Qaeda that was behind the attacks, where did they get the money from? Most reports all go back to Saudi Arabia.

In order to run a proper terrorist organization you need lots of money. What bothers me is the Western world for the most part is funding these organizations by purchasing oil from Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq.

Whether you believe in Global Warming or not most of us are at very least thinking about changing our bad habits when it comes to the environment. Car companies are now being forced to offer alternative fuel options and hybrid vehicles. Let's face it most of the reasons that we are choosing to recycle, compost, drive less and just in general take less from this planet is because we are legitimately concerned about what this blue ball is going to look like in 20-60 years. For most of us we'll still be here when things get ugly.

In theory it's somewhat selfish and there is nothing wrong with that. Here is the major problem in my eyes, it's going to take some time before we can really make an impact on our oil usage. I have to admit it appears to be happening faster that I would have expected. The question is why are we buying our oil from countries that fund insane people that want us dead?

Say what you want about the Canadian Tar Sands and the amount of extra pollution it costs, last time I checked Canadians aren't flying planes into tall buildings.

Here is what I think we should do, continue spending a huge amount of effort reducing our dependency on oil through known alternatives. As for places like the Tar Sands for the time being spend a lot of money on research as there are better ways to get the sand separated from the oil. A little extra pollution for a short period of time would be better than having a nuclear bomb kill us all because some dude in Afghanistan thinks we are the Anti Christ.
